Atlantic Coast Pipeline Meeting
Below is an excerpt from a recent Duke Energy email regarding the proposed pipeline that may come through our area. Not much has been said about this project, and heretofore there has been very little input from Cumberland County residents. If you have thoughts on this project, this will be an opportunity to voice them.
Atlantic Coast Pipeline meetings
As you are aware, in September, 2014, Duke Energy announced our partnership with three other companies to own a 550-mile interstate natural gas pipeline from West Virginia through Virginia and into Eastern North Carolina. The Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP) will be permitted, built and operated by Dominion. It's the largest capital project in North Carolina and will be the state's second major natural gas pipeline. It will help Duke Energy gain access to new and lower-cost supplies of natural gas to serve our customers in North Carolina and South Carolina.
To date, the project has substantial support in North Carolina. More than 25 counties, economic development organizations, state leaders and others have endorsed the project.
The pipeline is expected to bring opportunities for significant economic development, growth, tax revenue and jobs along the route in eastern North Carolina. During the construction period alone, the pipeline is estimated to produce more than $680 million in economic activity in the state. It is also projected to save consumers and businesses approximately $377 million annually in lower energy costs.
Building and operating the pipeline requires Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approval, which we hope to have in place by summer, 2016. The extensive FERC review solicits input from numerous regulators in addition to private citizens.
A key step in the process begins next week with FERC meetings which provide an opportunity for community leaders and the public to comment on the benefits of the pipeline.
